In 1994, Ontario became the first province in Canada to regulate midwifery. Since that time, midwives have attended more than 100,000 births in Ontario. There are currently more than 700 registered midwives in the province.
Responsibility for well-being rests with both the health care provider and with each individual. We believe that the best midwifery care is attained when women and families make informed decisions about their care and develop a comfortable and co-operative relationship with a small team of midwives.
The College of Midwives of Ontario’s (CMO) has standards that set minimum expectations that must be met by any midwife in any setting or role. Standards guide the professional knowledge, skills and judgment needed to practice midwifery safely.
