Amy is humbled and honored to now have worked in the maternity care setting in Thunder Bay for close to 20 years! Thunder Bay is her hometown and she feels a special connection to the city and the people living here. She graduated from Laurentian University receiving a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree – Midwifery in the spring of 2007. Prior to becoming involved with midwifery, Amy completed a Bachelor of Science degree – Biology at Lakehead University. It is through her own experience of childbearing and mothering that Amy has found herself working in her chosen profession. Amy feels the most important part of midwifery care is being able to provide informed choice to our clients. Encouraging, watching and allowing clients to become primary decision makers in their care is essential to her practice. Being a former midwifery client herself, she feels midwifery provided her a first glimpse and understanding of what compassionate, respectful, holistic, and family oriented medical care could be.

Mataya (She/Her) graduated from the McMaster Midwifery Education Program in 2022. During the program, she did placements in: lactation – specializing in NICU lactation support, pelvic floor physiotherapy, crown point’s expanded midwifery scope, obstetrics, nursing, NICU, and of course midwifery. Her senior year of midwifery placements was in Guelph where she was hired to return as a midwife after graduation.
Prior to her midwifery degree, Mataya earned an Honours Bachelor of Science specializing in Health Research from the University of Waterloo. Mataya was drawn to midwifery because of it’s strengths in supporting informed choice and building strong relationships with clients through continuity of care. Her hope is that her clients feel safe and empowered while she ‘walks with them’ during their pregnancies, births, and postpartum journeys.
Outside of midwifery, Mataya and her partner live with their newborn, 2 cats, and 20 chickens on a few acres close to town. Between visits and births Mataya can usually be found reading a good book or knitting baby hats. When she is off-call, she can be found with her family making music, working with her hands in the garden, at the pottery wheel, or with a paintbrush. Mataya is looking forward to being part of your care team.
